NextEV Nio is one of those small companies that desperately needs your attention. They are probably neck-deep in debt, unsure whether their product has any commercial future and likely spending as much on marketing as they are on engineering.
They would like you to refer to EP9 as "world's fastest electric car" but I am not buying the bull-crap. I am not sponsored by Nio or any other manufacturer and I have no interest in regurgitating bogus claims that some manufacturer writes in their press release. I am not playing along.
Nio say they have set two more records - "fastest autonomous car in the world" and "fastest production car around Circuit of Americas". The first one is fluff and can be ignored, the second is fake news.
To call a car "production car" it has to meet certain criteria. First of all, it has to be a road car. I have not seen a single picture of EP9 with real numberplates. It is not road legal, folks - not in Europe, not in America.
Second, it has to be production ready. The car has to be exactly like it will be when it goes to customers. What it really means is that it has to be built on a "production line", using same processes that will be used when building cars for customers. Anything else is a "pre-production test mule", not a "production car".
As far as I can tell, Nio EP9 meets neither of the criteria. Yet they crown themselves as makers of "world's fastest electric car" and holders of production car lap records.
