Yes. This was the beginning of golden era of horsepower gains. The automotive version of "Moore's law". Thanks to advances in electric cars, these gains are even accelerating at the mid and high end cars. At low end we see effects of downsizing (1 liter 3 cylinders etc) - economy cars have same-ish horsepower for the past 5-7 years.

On most tracks, but not on every track. I would comfortably bet on E55 at Monza for example, or some other track with huge straights.
Regardless, E55 is never going to be as enjoyable as M3 on track. And it was not made for track.

What’s really funny is that the E55 AMG was created in an era of underpowered sports sedans like the Jaguar S-Type R/XJR, the Infiniti M45/Q45, the Cadillac CTS-V, the SRT8 twins (of the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger varieties), and surprise surprise the Maserati Quattroporte. (The STS-V was the greater-than-CLS55,-but-not-quite-S55 competitor.)
Compared to all of the “underpowered” sedans above, the E55 AMG usually performed rather poorly on a road course and especially in the skidpad department. DaimlerChrysler’s own E55 was slower than the SRT8 twins in everything but straight-line performance.

The E-Class of both the W210 and W211 varieties was really a Lucid Air with gasoline power instead of electricity and for the 1990s and 2000s instead of the 2020s and 2030s.
