They were manufactured by a Randall AMC dealership in Mesa, Arizona, under a special agreement with AMC. They built 20 for the street and one more for the strip. They sold in 72,73 and 74 for an astonishing US $2995. Equivalent to US$17,249 in 2019 dollars.

No, they had a 2.8l V6 option as well, but no V8. Though it was very common to put a 302 or 289 into one.

I am pretty sure the ford pinto had a V8 in its hatch back format as well. The Mustang 2 Cobra was also a V8 Hatchback.

My 1974 AMC White Lightning Gremiln X, 304 ci (Holley 4 barrel, Hooker Headers, Hush Thrush, 3.73 rear) won First Place at 75-80 Drag-a-way drag strip. never returned. Then a 455 ci , Pontiac Firebird Trans Am came into my reach, pedal to the metal!
