Mustang GT 5.0 competition

Why did M/T run a track configuration that was 1.55 miles instead of the usual 1.8 miles!

Well, Motor Trend did a comparison test of this face lifted Mustang GT 5.0 with the new track pack against the new Camaro SS 1LE at the Streets of Willow. Randy Pobst got some incredible lap times with both, but it was a clear victory for the Camaro. The V6 stays the same at 305 hp, as does the Boss 302 with 444 hp. The Shelby GT500 got the big upgrades with the power going from 550 to 662 hp. The Mustang GT had the piston oil squirters eliminated, and got re-rated at 420 hp. I use the term re-rated since dyno tests show no actual increase in power.

They raised all the Bhp on the 2013 Mustangs, V6 300bhp-305bhp, GT 5.0 412bhp-420bhp, GT500 550bhp-662bhp, But they didnt on the Boss, same 444bhp, kinda strange no?..

Just added some performance figures from Motor Trend: 0-60 4.3 seconds; 1/4 mile 12.7 at 111.1 mph. Here is a link: http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/coupes/1206_2013_ford_mustang_gt_premium_first_test/

Interestingly the SAE rating of 420 hp is conservative, just not as conservative as the original Coyote rating of 412 hp. JLT (a cold air intake manufacturer) uses a dynojet chassis dyno for tuning purposes. Peak horsepower at the rear wheels for the 2013 was 360 with 87 octane fuel, and 369 with 93 octane. They said that the 2011 and 2012 models tested on the same dynojet got the same numbers. The 2013 did have a smoother power curve, but the overall power was essentially the same as the earlier models. In any case, it seems that the Coyote 5.0 DOHC engine is a bit of an overachiever. Most of its extra power at the wheels is probably due to the live axle rear having more efficient power delivery compared to the almost ubiquitous independent rear suspensions of the competition. Ford isn't the only manufacturer guilty of conservative numbers, some BMW and Audi models have underrated engines as well.

@Inline 6 rules thanks for adding the facelift model. I am sure it will do well on the track. I guess we should try and be consistent on the year. Introduced in 2012, but called by Ford a 2013 model. I guess my 2011 model should have 2010 on its car page as well, since it was available in 2010?? Oh well, whatever. :)

They finally fixed the seats! The standard seats now have adjustable head rests, and for aggressive cornering they now have the better bolstered Recaro seat option. This is a major improvement, and much more important than the 8 horsepower increase in the official rating. Some styling evolution, and gadget add ons as well.

The facelifted GT. Now it has 420 HP instead of 412. The design also changed a bit.
